Weaving the SYSU Tapestry: A Symphony of 2025 Memories

Written by: Pei Tuo Edited by: Feng Xianzhe

As we look back at 2025, we reflect on the vibrant threads that weave the fabric of life at Sun Yat-sen University. To be a "SYSUer" is to belong to a grand design - a tapestry where personal growth, academic rigor, and global engagement intertwine to portray a university in motion.

In this collection, we highlight five unique voices from the past year. From the quiet corners of our campus to the frontlines of international diplomacy, these are the moments that define our collective journey.

1. Tina Hasan

"The beauty of SYSU lies in the quiet creases of daily life, and I want to be the one who gently unfolds them."

2025 marked my evolution into a true storyteller. Over the past year, my leans has chased the shifting hues of sunrise and sunset. I have captured the raw energy of classmates in chorus at college party, the vibrant swirl of Xinjiang ethnic dances, and the frantic, passionate hustle of the microfilm on set. I have recorded the simple warmth of dormitory aunts’ greetings and the stillness of my own afternoons, reading under the shade of a tree. Each frame is a witness to what it means to truly "live" here.

Looking ahead to 2026, I want to push my creative boundaries by experimenting with new angles, techniques, and perspectives to keep our story authentic. Through my camera, others will fall in love with SYSU just as I have.

2.Sudin

One of my most memorable moments was participating in International Culture Festival. Standing on the stage was a series of "firsts" for me: my first time performing in a foreign land, and my first time wearing the elegant folds of Hanfu to recite ancient Chinese poetry. In that moment, the beauty of Chinese culture wasn't just something I studied—it was something I lived. Beyond the stage, from the flavors of Panama and Korea to the traditions of Myanmar and Vietnam, I felt the pulse of the world right here at SYSU.

As I step into 2026, I hope to continue sharpening my professional skills, to stay healthy and mindful, and to embrace whatever smooth paths the new year brings.

3. Yao Zhengnuo

"Serving the Greater Bay Area, Staying true to my medical calling."

Reflecting on 2025, my most cherished memory revolves around volunteering for the 15th National Games and the National Special games. It was a year of milestones: the awe of the opening ceremony, the camaraderie of serving with thousands of fellow volunteers, and the honor of sharing our story with CCTV and Xinhua News Agency. It truly felt like being at the center of a historic moment.

A major highlight was seeing the youth from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao working hand-in-hand. We are more than just volunteers, but we are the bridge-builders of the Greater Bay Area. This experience turned the concept of "Greater Bay Area Unity"(湾区同心) into a living reality for me.

In 2026, I am channeling this energy into my medical studies, as the joy of helping others has reinforced my commitment to medicine.

4. PHAM THUY ANH

My 2025 began as a blank page, traversed through uncertainty, but blossomed into a journey of immense worth. Balancing rigorous academics, I realized early doubts were merely growing pains.

The Sino-French Nuclear Research Program stood out as my most meaningful milestone this year—a transformative intellectual odyssey. Immersed in Sino-French pedagogical innovation, I learned to view complex problems through a completely different lens. This masterclass in global communication proved that true progress lies in interdisciplinary synergy. Every hesitant step was a meaningful stride toward growth.

Looking toward 2026, I aim to master a new language to empower my international research, ensuring every future step remains a meaningful stride.

5. AHMED AL-KUHAL

For me, 2025 was defined by the profound honor of co-authoring a letter to President Xi Jinping. Receiving his warm reply was not only a personal milestone but a powerful testament to the significance of promoting mutual learning among civilizations. My engagement continued in Riyadh, where I met with Shao Zheng, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Yemen. Discussing China-Yemen cultural cooperation reinforced my belief that international exchange thrives on the synergy of culture, education, and policy.

In my research on Sustainable Tourism, I witnessed how Chinese communities achieve “benefit-to-community” growth through cultural preservation—a true people-centered practice.

In 2026, I aspire to share these Chinese experiences with the world and attract more talented students from the Arab world to Sun Yat-sen University. I remain dedicated to serving as a bridge, using scholarship and practice to foster global understanding and integration.
